Recruitment in a Monopsonistic Labour Market: Will Travel Costs be reimbursed?

چکیده
Reimbursement of commuting costs by employers has attracted little attention from economists. We develop a theoretical model of a monopsonistic employer who determines an optimal recruitment policy – in a spatial labour market with search frictions, and show that, in general, partial reimbursement of commuting cost will be an element of the recruitment policy. The empirical evidence we offer is consistent with the interpretation of reimbursement as the result of monopsonistic behaviour. The alternative explanation, which stresses the role of tax incentives, is unlikely to provide a full explanation of commuting costs reimbursement. JEL classification: J33

Wage-Tenure Contracts in a Frictional Labour Market: Firms’ Strategies for Recruitment and Retention
This paper analyses the contract-posting equilibrium in a general equilibrium matching model of the labour market with on-the-job turnover. Privately optimal contracts have a rising wage-tenure profile, even when productivity is constant. The effect is to reduce equilibrium turnover; when jobs differ in productivity, turnover is below the level required for efficient matching of workers to jobs...
متن کاملMonopsony and the Efficiency of Labour Market Interventions
Implicit in many discussions of labour market policy is the assumption that, in the absence of interventions, the operation of the labour market is well-approximated by the perfectly competitive model. The merits or demerits of particular policies is then seen as a trade-off between efficiency and equality. This paper analyses the impact of a variety of policies – the minimum wage, trade unions...

Does Equal Pay Legislation Reduce Labour Market Inequality? This paper considers a labour market model of monopsonistic competition with taste-based discrimination against minority workers to study the effect of equal pay legislation on labour market inequality. When the taste for discrimination is small or competition is weak, the policy removes job segregation and the wage gap completely. How...
متن کاملMinimum Wages, Employment and Monopsonistic Competition∗
We set out a model of monopsonistic competition, where each employer competes equally with every other employer. The employment effects of minimum wages depend on the degree of distortion in the labor market. If fixed costs per firm are high then the labor market is relatively non-competitive and minimumwages increase employment. Conversely, low fixed costs make for a more competitive labor mar...
